Let’s Get Started

Posted at 8:51 pm under Hawkesdale, Mrs Mirtschin

Our whole school assembly

Our school started yesterday, with teachers returning and planning lessons for our first term. We have 5 weeks holiday over summer then 4 terms, with a two week break between each of the terms. How many terms and holidays do you have?
It was with great interest that I read your comments and my class will love looking at them as well, so thank you. Now to answer some of them and the class will answer others when we get settled in.
We live in a temperate climate which means that we do not have snow, live 30mins drive from the Southern Ocean and have had temperatures of 40-42 degrees this summer. (I think that is about 105deg Fahrenheit).
Our students live mostly on farms, so they have lots of pets, especially pet lambs. Sometimes we see kangaroos and there are quite a few snakes on our farms. We do not have any dingoes near us but we have lots of possums who come out at night and eat all our fruit, some garden plants and roses.
Hawkesdale is a very small town of 150 people so most of our students come in on buses. Our school goes from  prep to year 12 so we have 5 year old through to 18 year old students. The closest city is Warrnambool which is on the Great Ocean Road.

Fire pole
As it is summer here now, bushfires are always a danger. We had a powerpole near us catch on fire on Monday, so volunteer firefighters and 8 fire trucks had to go and fight the blaze. The power people had to switch our electricity off for 1 ½ hours to make sure that the pole was dead. Police closed our road. Lucky the wind was not blowing so we were able to put the fire out quite quickly.  Below are some photos taken.

Wow, that is some fire, we had some tornadoes here recently and they caused a massive gas fire a while away. Last summer we got up to about 104 degress farenheit or 40 degrees celcius.

We have 4 terms of 9 weeks and 4 vacations (holiday). 3 weeks for Winter Break, 1 week for Spring Break. 6 weeks for Summer Break and 2 weeks for Fall Break. Right now the climate is like about 35 degrees F. In U.S.A there are Elementary School (Kindergarten - 6 or 5) Middle School (6 - 8) High Schools (9 - 12) then we go to collage. That is 3 different schools. In our school in 4 - 6 grade we have apple laptops. Do you watch the Australian Open? My dad is crazy about it. We live in Murfreesboro. There is A LOT of people there. It used to be the captial of the state a long time ago but the new captial now is Nashville. We don’t have much fires. Sometimes in the summer there is fires in the south.

I am real sorry about the fire thing. That must of been a lot of fire trucks. I’m guessing that it was kind of scarey to have your electricity off for an hour and a half. I would like to learn more about the snakes up there. Like what percentage of snakes are up there, or how venomous the snakes are. Oh I almost forgot I would like to know if the most poisionous snake in the world is there and what is it.

Hello from Texas! We can definitely relate your wildfire facts as the area where we are has been greatly affected by wildfires as well. It is not uncommon to drive past a scorched piece of land among our state highways. The weather in Texas is always changing! This weekend it was in the seventies and eighties and then on Friday of this week, they say their might be snow! There’s a saying in Texas: “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, wait a minute and it will probably change!”
